Head of Risk

You will build the risk function from the ground up as an individual contributor. You will define customer underwriting, transaction authorization, dynamic limits, reserves, exposure policies, fraud detection, and controls for stablecoins, wallets, RfP, and international payment rails. You will select and deploy risk tooling, automate case handling with AI, work with data using SQL and ideally Python, and establish systems that scale with transaction volume. You will also explain risk decisions clearly and help develop the future risk team.

Responsibilities

• Build the risk function from the ground up
• Define customer onboarding and underwriting decisions
• Establish transaction authorization rules and dynamic limits
• Set reserve policies and quantify loss exposure
• Select and deploy risk detection and decisioning tools
• Automate risk case handling with AI tooling
• Design controls for stablecoins wallets RfP and international payment rails
• Partner with Compliance on KYB and related risk decisions
• Create coherent risk and compliance systems
• Explain risk tradeoffs and decisions across the business
• Hire and develop the risk team over time

Requirements

• Experience building a risk function at an early-stage or high-growth company
• Specific payments risk experience including ACH returns settlement timing unauthorized debit exposure and counterparty risk
• Ability to learn unfamiliar payment rails and translate their risks into controls
• Systems thinking and experience designing decisioning processes at scale
• Technical and data fluency with SQL and ideally Python
• Experience applying modern AI tools to operational problems
• Experience handling fraud loss events or failed controls
• Strong judgment and ability to explain consequential decisions
• Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders
• Previous management experience is a plus
